Garage door maintenance tips

Your garage door is the largest moving part of your home and can be used extremely regularly. So much use and wear on anything mechanical can begin to take its toll and lead to damage or faults over time. Make sure you are aware of the various maintenance tips that you can do at home to ensure that your garage lasts in good health for longer.

Here are some of the main preventative and maintenance tips all homeowners can do at home:

Look and listen

One of the most important and easiest preventative tips you can do it simply look out and listen for any faults. One of the first signs of failures can be heard or seen if you know what to look out for. If you notice any jerky motions when opening your garage or can hear any screeching or creaking noises, try to avoid using it and get a closer inspection.

Tighten the hardware

The average garage door is opened and closed over a thousand times a year, so the more movement and vibrations it endures, the higher the risk of a fault occurring. Over time this can loosen the hardware and the many parts that go into the door, so make sure you examine and tighten them all.

Inspect or replace the rollers.

The rollers by which the garage doors open and close on should be inspected every year and ideally replaced every 5 years or so. Worn or cracked rollers should be replaced as soon as possible to prevent any further damage to elsewhere on the door. You can replace the roller at home by removing and reinstalling the roller brackets that are not attached to the cable system, or simply call a professional.
