Picking the right garage door

The process of choosing a garage door can be a confusing business, so the aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive guide to choosing the right garage door for your home.

Choose the material

The main things to consider with regard to the material are design, durability, maintenance and cost. Here is a breakdown of what some of the most popular garage door materials have to offer:

       1) Aluminum

  • Available in huge range of designs and colours
  • Low maintenance
  • Rustproof
  • Lightweight - easier to operate and less of a strain on the operating mechanism, tracks and door openers
  • Less durable than steel, which that it is more prone to denting

         2) Steel

  • Also available in a variety of styles, colours and finishes
  • Stronger than aluminium
  • Can sometimes be susceptible to rust if scratched or dented

         3) Wood

  • Traditional design
  • Range of customisable options
  • Can be used as a veneer at lower cost than solid wood
  • Needs regular maintenance

          4)  Fibreglass/PVC overlay

  • Large number of styles and designs
  • More durable than both metal and wood, although can crack if hit hard
  • Not as widely available as other materials
  • Costs less than solid wood, but more than metal

Choose a door that complements the rest of the property

For aesthetic purposes and to increase/maintain resale value, it always a good idea to choose a door that is in-keeping with the rest of your property. So, if you have a traditional-style home, you might like to choose our wooden Georgian or Edwardian-style doors, whereas if you live in ultra-modern house, a more contemporary design will modern technology would perhaps be more appropriate.

Pick the right colour

For the same reasons it is also important to choose a colour that matches the rest of the house. To co-ordinate effectively, you might consider matching the colour of your garage door to the window trim as opposed to the front door, or even match the colour to the brickwork or siding of your house.

Insulation adds protection from noise, so if you plan to use the garage as a workshop and don’t want to disturb either your family or your neighbours, or you simply want to be more energy efficient, choose well-insulated doors, keeping in mind that the R value represents the level of protection provided by each door’s insulated core.

If you choose an automated door, it may be advisable to to choose a door equipped with an obstruction sensor.

For extra security, you can choose doors without handles as well as keypad entry to foil attempted burglaries.

It is also important to make sure that your garage door is properly installed and it would therefore be sensible to arrange for professionals to do this.
