Pros and Cons?

It can be easy to get overwhelmed with the amount of information there is about garage doors. Here at Bradford Garage Doors we have used our expertise and experience in the industry to compile it all into this simple buyer’s guide.

  • Durability - A top-quality steel garage door is galvanized for protection – made from 24-gauge steel it will easily last for at least ten years.
  • Low maintenance / inexpensive – long lasting durability and, with the right quality, is completely resistant to rust.
  • Customisation - With different panel styles, window designs, paint colors, and more to enhance your home’s appearance.

  • Dent Prone – if the quality of the steel is low; thinner steel is more likely to dent and is more susceptible to rust.
  • Aesthetically Basic – there is nothing overly attractive looking about steel, it does what it is supposed to do, simply and effectively. However, Bradford Garage Doors can change that a little with our range of styles, colours and finishes.

Timber / wood

  • Visually Stunning – Wood and timber is by far the most authentic looking and has the most natural beauty of any material available.  It stands out with its timeless elegance that compliments any home whether it is traditional or modern.
  • Increase house value – because the wood effect adds such a drastic amount of prestigious authenticity it is a huge desirable and a big deal clincher for new buyers.

  • Maintenance - Wood and deco-grain garage doors will need more upkeep than the likes of steel. Refurbishing and painting may need doing once a year and so will need checking for scuffs and marks.
  • Overtime damage - Our wood / timber doors are made to the most durable of standards, but it is more likely to show wear and tear over time than the likes of steel.  This TLC is just a small price to pay for its timeless beauty.

  • Light – Aluminium is a very light metal which makes it easier for any lifting or opening the doors.
  • Sturdy – Despite its weight it is still a metal and can very efficiently withstand the effects of strong winds and cold winters.
  • Versatility – Bradford Garage Doors can customise aluminium doors precisely to your desire and taste with lots of different colours and styles available.

  • Aluminium tends to be more expensive than steel.
  • Aluminium doors tend to dent easier than steel because it is constructed from lighter material.

  • Fibreglass doors can be easily made to look like wood so it has the same visually pleasing aspect.
  • Fibreglass has a strong amount of protection against dents.
  • A fiberglass door will not shrink or expand with changes in temperature and moisture.

  • Insulation - Fibreglass is a fairly poor insulator because it’s not as thick as other materials. But you can buy fibreglass insulation foam to help change that, especially if you have a garage conversion.
