What size Garage Door?

When planning and building a garage, and therefore a garage door, for your Bradford home it is important to consider the size of the build. While there is no official ‘correct’ size that your garage door should be, there are certain guidelines you should follow to ensure you have your ideal, practical garage.

The standard width for a single car garage door has been, for many years, 7 feet (2134mm) and 14 feet (4267mm) for a double garage. However with the development of the modern car this is fast becoming too small for cars to comfortably fit. The standard size is now 8 feet (2438mm) for a single, and 16 feet (4877mm) for a double. Height wise, the average size is about 7 feet but again with the rise in popularity of 4x4 vehicles more height is now required in a standard garage.

The ideal size can actually differ depending on the type of garage door you are installing, as all types have different requirements for the actual structural opening. If you are looking to maximise every inch of space then a roller or sectional garage door may be the right choice for you. When open they are neatly stored away within the garage, creating the clearest and largest opening. Plus sectional and roller garages are easy to install and can usually be made to size.  For up-and-over and side hinged garage doors however it can be more difficult to get a purpose built door made to size.

Every garage and personal specification is different. If you are looking install a new garage door in your Bradford home and want to discuss your ideal garage door size with an expert, do not hesitate to get in touch with the team at Bradford Garage Doors on 01274 352 303.
