Why it’s important to keep your garage door locked

28/07/2017

Whilst garages were originally designed to be somewhere to store a car, they are being increasingly used for other purposes. As homeowners look to maximise the use of space within their properties it’s not uncommon for garages to be used in other ways too, for example as home offices and gyms or even as a spare room. This increased use of the garage means that it is now more important than ever to keep your garage door locked in order to protect valuable belongings inside it. At Bradford Garage Doors we understand the importance of security and recommend taking these two simple steps to keep your property protected:

1. Don’t leave your garage door open

This might sound really obvious, but the most important thing to do is to keep your garage door shut when you are not using it. Leaving the door open all the time creates the perfect environment for opportunist thieves to grab some of your belongings. It also shows anyone passing by exactly what is in your garage and what may be worth coming back for at a later date.

2. Treat your garage door like your front door

A good thing to do is to treat your garage door like any other door to your property. This means keeping it locked at all times to ensure it is secure. This includes any internal doors from the garage to your property if the two are attached. It also means making sure that it is properly maintained to make it less easy to break into. Make time to regularly check for corrosion on the locks, rollers or hinges and replace any damaged parts immediately.
