Your phone could open garage

With a seemingly endless list of new uses for smartphones, it will come as no surprise to many of you that you can now use it to open your garage door. Here are number of different ways that this can be done:

With a Bluetooth headset

Bluetooth headsets can be purchased from a number of websites and high street stores selling electronic goods. When you have purchased the headset, break open its earpiece, take any one of its exposed wires and solder it to the base pin of a transistor. Then solder each of the remaining wires to the other pins, with each wire being given its own pin, before connecting the red and black wires to the garage door opener.

This process utilises the audio amplifier with the Bluetooth headset. To make the whole process much simpler, there is a dedicated app called GarageMate, which is available on the Android platform and which has proven very popular. The manufacturers say that it can be installed with little effort in two minutes and is compatible with all garage openers built over the last 30 years.

With the HIQ Automation iOpener

Developed by Joshua Gramlich and Steve Szymke, the iOpener takes the form of a small box that can be connected to your existing garage door opener within minutes, after which it can be paired with your Android phone via Bluetooth. The device allows you to set a 16-digit security code, so that no-one else is able to gain access to the garage without your permission.

Tap it Open

This is another app on the market that also utilises Bluetooth technology to enable you to control your garage door from your Android or iOS smartphone. It is easy to install and includes a large of attractive security features, as well as supporting the password protection feature found on all smartphones.

Daisy Bluetooth Multi-Thing Controller

This is a complete control kit that includes a USB adapter and cable, Bluetooth breakout board and free software for the Android platform, which - among its many features – allows you to create multiple buttons with customisable labels. The controller utilises control switches and screw terminals.
